Coloring Our Hair with Chalk

After our previous attempts at coloring streaks in our hair (see here and here) had faded,  Lauren and I were browsing The Beauty Department and decided to try a less permanent method of hair dyeing.

Basically, we just ran small pieces of our hair under water and then rubbed the wet hair with chalk (the kind for art, not the kind for sidewalks, although I don't see why sidewalk chalk wouldn't work). Then we rinsed the chalk out, and the hair dried colorfully.

Doctor Who: Rose Tyler Makeup and Hair Tutorial

The most recent seasons of Doctor Who are on Netflix Instant so I watched them all last summer and loved them. Then, I found out that Doctor Who is this big phenomenon sweeping this nation as well as others. I'm on board.

Anyway, something I was wondering was if Doctor Who watchers are also makeup noticers. My guess is no. But who knows? I noticed Rose Tyler's character had a sort of signature makeup look and I thought it would be fun to try to recreate it.

In the show, most of the time, she's wearing eyeliner and gobs of mascara and has a rosy glow and messy hair from all the world saving and escaping death that she has to do all the time. I know the feeling.

I'm kidding.

I've never saved the world.

One day, though.

Here's my face with no makeup on and just tinted moisturizer. She doesn't seem like a character who would wear lots of face makeup, so I just evened out my skin tone with Urban Defense tinted moisturizer from Urban Decay. The color I used was Halo. Maybe that's why I have creepy glowing rings in my eyes.

Project #19: Make Macarons

I made macarons last night! I've always wanted to, but I assumed the process was complex and difficult because they're sold for $2 each at French bakeries.

As it turns out, I can make macarons at home! (And you can, too!)

Easy Ways to Update Makeup + Hair for the New Year

My sister Tyler was bored of her look, and she has been considering getting a drastic haircut, but wanted a change in her hair and makeup until then.

She usually wears makeup that is mostly natural, and doesn't like to spend a lot of time on hair and makeup in the morning before work, so I used Urban Decay Cream Eyeshadow in Asphalt on her eyelids. It looks dark in the tube, but comes off as a light gray with some sparkles (for fun).

How to Look Sort of Like You're from the 1920s (okay, that's a bit of a stretch, but what ELSE am I going to call this post??)

If you have straight hair that doesn't hold curls well, read on!

Also, read on otherwise because you LOVE this blog!

Here's how to get lovely, loose, curly waves that last:

Viral Spirals (inspired by Zooey Deschanel)

A TV show that I'm loving right now is New Girl starring the adorable Zooey Deschanel. Something that I think is cool about her, among other things, is the way she hasn't changed her hair very much in the years that she has been famous. Her big brown curls and long, wispy bangs have become a sort of signature of hers, and although I don't have bangs, I decided to try to recreate her look.

Countdown to Autumn: 21 Days (pumpkin cookies, chai tea, and scented pinecones)

As you probably know if you're one of our loyal (five) subscribers, I just love autumn. Everything about it makes me gleeful.

I thought that in order to get you all in the spirit, a countdown was in order.

I am now proceeding to fill my days with festive recipes, decorations, smells, flavors, and feelings.

I made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies the other day using this Food Network recipe. (Except I used semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate, and I didn't have any ground ginger, so I chopped up some ginger babies that we just happened to have [above].)

A Bow on My Nail and Braids in My Hair

I painted a bow on my fingernail!

I dipped the end of a toothpick into the nail polish bottle and used it to draw the design. It was not as difficult as I would have thought.

Project #13: Dye a Streak in My Hair (I've Got the Blues)

I dyed a blue streak in my hair!

I had never dyed my hair before, so I pretty much had no idea what I was doing, but I found a kit that had bleach, peroxide, dye, and gloves, and just took a chance.
